Internal Coordinator

The Vancouver Island Public Interest Research Group (VIPIRG) is an on-campus non-profit
organization dedicated to research and action for social and environmental justice. We are
located at the University of Victoria, Victoria, BC, in Lekwungen Territories.
Role:
The Internal Coordinator is responsible for administrative aspects of VIPIRG and, in
collaboration with the Research Coordinator, for coordinating outreach and communications
activities. The Internal Coordinator works closely with the Coordinating Collective (Board) to
facilitate the running of the organization and ensure the mandate is met. An emphasis on
process is key, meaning that the successful applicant values collective work, consensus
decision-making and anti-oppressive practices.
Responsibilities:
Position Specific Duties
Financial administration: liaise with bookkeeper, produce monthly financial statements,
maintain the budget, invoicing, insurance renewal, shuffling papers ;)
Communications: outreach material such as leaflets, posters, and newsletters;
relationships with organizations on and off campus; oversee and maintain web content;
annual report.
Organizational administration: AGM; contracts; refund period; lease negotiation; room
bookings; collaborate on updating VIPIRG’s policies, protocols and orientation materials.
Employee administration: ensure payroll, benefits, and collective agreement is followed.
Office coordination: supplies, equipment, space maintenance, filing systems, etc.
Committee support: work with Finance, Safer Spaces, Library & Personnel Committees.
Office hours: coordination of volunteers and staff to ensure office hours are maintained.
Organizational and Collective Duties
Work with the other staff and coordinating collective to facilitate VIPIRG’s activities: staff
and maintain the resource centre and library; hire and supervise student staff and
practicum students; recruit, train, and coordinate volunteers; respond to requests from
students and community members; help coordinate VIPIRG organizational work, retreats
and trainings; coordinate VIPIRG participation in community events (e.g. public
speaking, tabling).
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in relevant field or equivalent experience
Good understanding of the structure and day-to-day operations of nonprofits and/or
community organizations (ie. board, staff and volunteers)
Experience in community organizing and social justice initiatives
Commitment to VIPIRG’s mandate and organizational prioritiesJOB POSTING

Internal Coordinator
Working knowledge of anti-oppressive practice (actively challenging interlocking systems
of oppression)
Ability to work with a broad range of people and political perspectives
Ability to work both autonomously and with others
Ability to work occasional irregular hours
Ability to problem-solve and prioritize tasks in a sometimes hectic work environment
Required Skills:
Demonstrated commitment to social and environmental justice work
Demonstrated organizational and communication skills
Experience with, and commitment to, consensus decision-making and facilitation
Experience with conflict resolution and mediation
Knowledge of and experience with financial management and budgeting
Experience maintaining policies, meeting minutes, and filing systems
Experience working with student groups, volunteers and community organizations
Strong computer knowledge: experience with Mac and PC computers and software,
including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), internet and email
Familiarity with blog/ website management and social media, or the capacity to learn
Excellent writing skills
Experience with coordinating events and community projects/ campaigns
A sense of humour
Assets:
Desktop publishing skills (e.g. Indesign)
Familiarity with Simply Accounting, payroll, bookkeeping and/or collective agreements
Knowledge of local community and campus social and environmental organizations
This is a unionized term position (up to 3 years, possibility to renew once), 28 hours/week, starts
at $18.85/hour, plus benefits. ** details to be confirmed pending ratification of collective
agreement.
