There’s a real David and Goliath battle unfolding in drought-stricken Oregon.
For years, giant multinational Nestlé has been bent on pumping fresh water out of Cascade Locks, Oregon, to bottle and sell for profit -- a plan that local residents have been fighting for the last six years.
Now, Nestlé is closing in on the deal. And local residents, tribal leaders, and regional NGOs have come together to stop the water-pilfering corporation in its tracks.
They’ve launched a historic ballot initiative to prevent any major bottled water company from commercializing water anywhere in the region.

This ballot measure comes at a crucial moment. As the world eyes an impending water crisis, brought on by climate change and the mismanagement of natural resources, corporations like Nestlé and Coca-Cola are eyeing precious natural water reserves, too often in economically desperate areas that are themselves facing water shortages.
This is why this defiant stand against Nestlé is so important – it shows that our communities will not let corporations take their precious resources without a fight.
The ballot measure has been filed and Oregon residents are furiously collecting signatures around Hood River -- the county where the battle is unfolding-- to get the initiative on the ticket for the next year’s election. It’s truly a mobilization to stop corporate greed in its tracks.
