Thank you from Canada's Minister for International Development

View in browser Dear Paov,

On June 7, I met with Global Citizen to accept an official petition signed by 2,810 people asking the Government of Canada to make a commitment to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI).

I have received over 30,000 Tweets and emails to the same effect, and I am inspired by the enthusiasm shown by Canadians and Global Citizens around the world who have chosen to act on this global issue.

I have received your message loud and clear.

Today, at the Rotary Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, I announced that the Government of Canada... will pledge $100 million to the GPEI.

In order to achieve full polio eradication continued support for the health workers who are on the front line of this battle is essential and Canada is proud to step up for them.

Together, we can eradicate polio, once and for all.

The impact of this statement cannot be understated. Such a statement is only possible to make today because of people like you, Global Citizens.

Watch my video to find out more about Canada’s commitment to polio eradication.

Canada has played an important role in polio eradication. Today only three countries remain affected by the disease and there were only 37 reported cases in 2016, down from 350,000 in 1988. If left unchecked, there would be over 200,000 cases worldwide in under 10 years.

Canada is committed to ending this virus once and for all.

Thank you for being part of the fight,
Marie-Claude Bibeau
Minister of International Development and La Francophonie
