Paov --

This past week has been unlike anything we have ever experienced.

Like so many of you, we spent the past week checking on our neighbours, sorting out working-from-home arrangements, providing essential services, and trying to make sense of the daily news updates. We hope you are well and staying safe.

We are all in awe of the people on the front lines working to keep us all safe and healthy. These public healthcare heroes - healthcare workers and support support staff in the hospitals, community and social services workers, lab technicians, pharmacists and first responders - are saving lives every day and deserve a huge thank you from all of us.

You can say a big thank you to our health care workers - first by staying home - but also by cheering them on each evening at 7pm. Applause for Health Care Workers started in Europe and has now spread across Canada. In BC, the residents in Vancouver’s West End led the applause, and it is... now happening in communities everywhere. Let’s keep the momentum going!

We also can’t forget to thank all the workers in the other essential services - grocery store clerks, sanitation workers, gas station attendants, janitors, bus and delivery drivers… They are going to their jobs every day for the collective good. For the rest of us, our crucial job is to stay home to keep the infection rate down in order to keep them, and ourselves, as safe as possible.

We can see everyone pulling together - grassroots community leaders, labour, politicians, government workers, researchers and decision makers in our health authorities - to come up with solutions to ensure all of us can get the support we need to remain safe.

And, thank you to you, to everyone who is doing their part: reaching out to their friends and family, offering support, dropping off groceries, being kind to their neighbours and staying safe.

The BC Health Coalition is actively working with our members and allies, decision makers in government and our provincial and national counterparts across the country to strengthen our public health care system as the pandemic unfolds.

Together, we can do this!
