Today is the last day of the Wet'suwet'en hearing in BC Supreme Court. Join us Tuesday to hear how it went.
Right now, Wet’suwet’en community members are resisting the transformation of their land and waters into a so-called ‘energy corridor’. Tomorrow, hereditary leaders will again face off against government and industry at the B.C. Supreme Court to defend the Skeena River’s sacred headwaters - and their ancestral home - from fossil fuel expansion. The stakes could not be higher for Indigenous land protectors. On last week’s webinar, we heard from hereditary leaders, a matriarch, and one of the lawyers for Wet’suwet’en. All shared the specific stories of how and why they are backing a judicial review that challenges Coastal GasLink’s fracked gas pipeline on the basis of human rights concerns.
Chief Madeek expressed his sorrow at the loss of his cousin, one of the thousands of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls who continue to be at risk due to man-camps installed adjacent to vulnerable communities.
And we heard from Kalaset, a language keeper whose life’s work has been to uphold cultural practices and Indigenous legal frameworks. Her work with women has been integral in building up her community, so her people have the resilience and strength to stand up and say, ‘no’ to fossil fuel projects that jeopardize our common future.
