Dear Friends

Greetings dear Zatoun supporters and friends,
As with every year around this time, Zatoun tries to give a window on the all-important olive harvest taking place in Palestine in these weeks. The olive harvest is critical for a number of reasons: - an affirmation of Palestinian ties to the land - the remaining trees are facts on the ground - the olive provides sustenance and... livelihood - a way to connect Palestine to the outside world
Below are links to interesting news reports of damage, restrictions and injustice during the harvest but at the same time human stories from farmers and how they cope with the yearly hardship and frustration.

Here in Canada, we have fully entered our own season of holiday fairs and gift-giving. Interestingly, there seems to be an upsurge in interest - is it because of greater awareness due to the bombing and destruction of Gaza this summer? Not the kind of sales stimulus one would wish for and we do not wish it. The dearest hope is for a just peace now.

Talking of Gaza, Zatoun's oil does not come from Gaza but from the West Bank. Nevertheless we are interested in this article about the olive harvest in Gaza - an especially tragic story but even here there is resilience, acceptance, strength and hope.

The great reporter Amira Hass writes in the also great Israeli newspaper Haaretz - Continuous invasions by settlers spoil the joy of Palestinians' olive harvest. The same topic covered by the Washington Post, Palestinians gird for settler attacks on olive trees. And a brief report from the UN Humanitarian Coordinator about the harvest.
Finally, a YouTube video of Palestinian farmer / worker (English-speaking) recounting his ordeal before being able to harvest for the first time in 14 years.
Unfortunately, this injustice is not limited to the Occupied Palestine but can be seen within Israel - Palestinian farmers in the Galilee suffer damaged and burned trees as part of the general domination and disenfranchisement of their towns.

Many groups and churches have stocked up for fairs and alternative markets with major purchases. If you are ready, please visit our order page as soon as possible. If you have questions before ordering, you can also call toll-free 1-866-294-9729. For itself, Zatoun is very grateful for the amazing support of the last 10 years - the little organization that has accomplished a lot. (see link for special 10th anniversary newsletter, for a list of accomplishments).

We wish you an active holiday season for a just Palestine-Israel in a peaceful world. > Visit Zatoun.
