Join us this week to oppose Kinder Morgan in Victoria!

Salish Sea Paddle

Hi PAOV,

This week, the battle against the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain tar sands pipeline has escalated. On Burnaby Mountain, citizens are standing up and risking arrest to stop the Texas oil giant from doing preliminary work for its new pipeline project.

As this grassroots resistance unfolds on the Lower Mainland, we on Vancouver Island have an opportunity to stand with local First Nations who oppose Kinder Morgan’s pipeline as a threat to their homelands and traditional way of life.

The National Energy Board (NEB) is conducting its hearings on the project, and oral presentations from west coast First Nations groups are happening this week in Victoria. These hearings are open to the public and are a chance to show the NEB and provincial and federal politicians that we stand with the First Nations that are opposed to Kinder Morgan.

On Wednesday, a short rally featuring local First Nations leaders will be held during the mid-day break.

What: Presentations by First Nations leaders to the NEB
Where: Victoria Conference Centre, 720 Douglas St., Victoria, BC
When: November 24 – 28, 9:00am-12:00pm, 1:30pm-4:30pm.

Rally: Wednesday, November 26, 12:00pm, outside Victoria Conference Centre

The NEB process is flawed – the Wilderness Committee has argued that the reviews for Kinder Morgan and other mega-projects haven’t done enough to incorporate impacted communities or address issues like climate change. Additionally, the Kinder Morgan proposal runs counter to First Nations’ rights and it is of the utmost importance that we support these indigenous leaders as they give voice to their deep-rooted opposition.

We encourage you to attend the hearings and bear witness to the oral testimonies, and join local First Nations leaders and local citizens for a rally outside the Conference Centre this Wednesday.

You can help raise the profile of these stories and draw awareness to First Nations opposition through social media, by sharing quotes on Facebook and tweeting (including the speakers name), using the hashtag #KinderMorgan.

At the Wilderness Committee, our opposition to the Kinder Morgan pipeline is part of our campaign to promote a healthy and stable climate and Save the Salish Sea from becoming a carbon corridor. Another way to stand in solidarity with the citizens on Burnaby Mountain is to sign the pledge at http://salishseaaction.org to Save the Salish Sea and join the international movement to keep climate-changing fossil fuel export projects out of this incredible water body.

Stay tuned for more updates on this campaign.
