Regenerative Foodsheds + Permaculture Picks + Apprenticeships

WHAT IS A GENERATIVE FOODSHED?

foodshed is the geographic location that produces the food for a particular population. The term describes a region where food flows from the area that it is produced to the place where it is consumed, including the land it grows on, the route it travels, the markets it passes through, and the tables it ends up on.

From Rodale Institute: By farming organically, we are regenerating the soil, returning the land to its natural state. We are also regenerating the health of ourselves and our family by reducing or eliminating chemical fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides.Beyond our farm, by not using chemicals, we are regenerating the wildlands and local environment. Wildlife and beneficial birds return to help keep down insects and other pests. Our local watershed has less pollution in the streams and creeks which come off...

our land. Finally, we are helping to regenerate our communities by recycling organic waste that would otherwise be an economic or environmental problem. By creating regenerative foodsheds, we are making the planet a healthier place--and are helping to regenerate the world.

PERMACULTURE PICKS: Favorite Resources

Permaculture Magazine features practical thought provoking articles on organic gardening, sustainable agriculture, agroforestry, climate change, peak oil, eco-villages, alternative technology, eco-architecture, personal and community development and much more.

Permies.com is the largest permaculture website with an incredible list of discussion forums for every permaculture topic you can possibly imagine: hugulkultur, forest gardening, greenhouses, and rainwater catchment, just to name a few.

Permaculture: A Designer's Manual, by Permaculture co-creator Bill Mollison, is the definitive Permaculture design manual in print since 1988. It is the text book and curriculum for many 72-hour Certificate course in Permaculture Design. It covers design methodologies and strategies for both urban and rural applications describing property design and natural farming techniques. Topics include: design methods, understanding patterns in nature, climatic factors, and earthworks.

Gaia’s Garden, by Toby Hemenway, sparked the imagination of America’s home gardeners, introducing permaculture’s central message: Working with Nature, not against her, results in more beautiful, abundant, and forgiving gardens. Many people mistakenly think that ecological gardening—which involves growing a wide range of edible and other useful plants—can take place only on a large, multiacre scale. As Hemenway demonstrates, it’s fun and easy to create a “backyard ecosystem” by assembling communities of plants that can work cooperatively and perform a variety of functions.
