Rally in Solidarity with Treaty 8 First Nations’ Opposition to Site C

PAOV,

Tomorrow, I’m heading north to raise my voice against the Site C dam at the annual Paddle for the Peace event. And for folks in BC’s Lower Mainland, there’s another opportunity to stand up for the Peace River Valley coming up in just two weeks!

On Thursday, July 23rd at noon there will be a rally in front of BC Hydro’s Vancouver office tower to show support for the Treaty 8 First Nations’ heroic stand against the Site C dam.

The Treaty 8 First Nations are from northeastern British Columbia near Fort St. John. They are battling the Site C dam to protect their homeland and Treaty rights. The fight is mounting and has made its way to the Federal Court of Canada, with hearings taking place in Vancouver during the full week of July 20th, 2015.

Your presence is needed to create the world we all want – where nature and human rights are protected.

If you or your friends have a hand drum, please bring it, along with a “Stop the Site C Dam” sign! We’ll help show the Treaty 8 First Nations how much we appreciate their efforts to protect the Peace River Valley.

The Site C Dam’s reservoir would swallow 83 kilometres of the Peace River Valley and 24 kilometres of the Moberly and Halfway River valleys combined, as well as numerous other tributaries. If built, the dam would drown islands with old-growth timber that moose, elk and deer depend on for birthing and protection from predators.

The Site C dam would also flood 3,800 hectares of farmland in the ALR – an area nearly twice the size of the city of Victoria.

The Drums for the Peace River Valley rally is supported by Treaty 8 First Nations, West Moberly First Nations, Wilderness Committee, Sierra Club and the Peace Valley Environment Association.

See you there!

P.S. For those who can’t make it to the rally or the Paddle for the Peace, there’s another important way you can support Treaty 8 in their efforts to stop Site C!r0
