5 days left to create a national park in the South Okanagan-Similkameen!

Hi PAOV,

Do you love Canada’s national parks?

If you do, help us create a new national park in the South Okanagan-Similkameen!

In August of this year, the BC government launched a public consultation period asking for public feedback on whether a national park in this region is a good idea. We have just five days left to say yes to this amazing opportunity – you can submit your comment here.

I grew up in the South Okanagan, and have been working on this campaign for over 10 years. I know a national park will provide the strong protection and appropriate funding this fragile region needs.

The arid South Okanagan-Similkameen is one of the four most endangered ecosystems in Canada. The rolling hills, fragrant pines and grasslands found here are home to 30 per cent of BC's endangered species – including badgers, rattlesnakes and charismatic burrowing owls. Establishing a national park would leave an amazing legacy for our children and grandchildren.

Check out our short video to see why this area needs our protection.

Please take five minutes to write your comments in support of a national park that will provide meaningful protection to at-risk wildlife and endangered grassland ecosystems in this magnificent region.

Don’t have five minutes? In two sentences, sum up your support for a national park that includes all three areas under consideration and ask that the government will consider connectivity in the future for adequate biodiversity management.

Thanks for taking action,

P.S. It is important to know that the majority of people living in the region support a national park. Independent polling has shown strong and growing support for the park, with the most recent poll conducted in March of 2015 showing over 3:1 local support. That support includes 79 per cent of farming or ranching families and 67 per cent of households who participate in snowmobile and ATV riding. Local First Nations governments are also in favour of the national park being established.
