Upcoming Repair Cafes

  • Print
Hi Transition Victoria members! There are upcoming Repair Cafés in Victoria (Feb. 13) and Saanich (Feb. 6), and an effort is underway to try to organize more Repair Cafés of these kinds throughout the region. Please see below for more information about the events, and about ways that you can get involved if you'd like to help build this great initiative!

Repair Cafés – One in Every Municipality?

Currently, Victoria and Saanich regularly host Repair Cafés, with groups beginning to organize in Fairfield, Esquimalt and Colwood. A goal is to see these Cafés active and co-ordinated throughout the region.

What’s a Repair Café? It’s a community building event bringing neighbours together to repair broken items and share skills. We promote ‘Reduce-Reuse-Recycle-REPAIR!' Repair Café started in Amsterdam in 2009 and now has more than 900 volunteer-run cafes in 15 countries. In Canada, Repair Café events can be attended from Sydney, Nova Scotia to Victoria, BC.

Men, women, professionals and hobbyists from across the region bring their knowledge, skill and tools. Community members bring their broken toasters, bicycles, clothing, tech gadgets; whatever needs fixing. In Saanich, local businesses have generously donated refreshments and supplies. The atmosphere is upbeat and the response is overwhelmingly positive…it’s a fun event!

The Victoria Cafés have been running for a year; hosted by the downtown Victoria Public Library, their next event is 9:30-12:30 Saturday, February 13. Saanich began in 2015; their next event is at Pearkes Rec Center (3100 Tillicum) 10:30-1:30 Saturday February 6. Please check out the links at the bottom of this message to learn more.

We hope YOU will consider getting involved in one of several ways

• Are you a Repairer willing to volunteer a few hours of your time?
• Can you bring your items to be repaired?
• Are you on Facebook and would be willing to ‘like’ and ‘share’ the local Repair Café events?
• Are you and a few others willing to organize a Café in your area? There’s help getting started!
