Energy and May's BC Election

The May 9th provincial election in BC has resulted in a historic situation that the BCSEA is watching very closely. It is still unknown which party will be forming government and a few different outcome are possible.

The BC Liberals currently hold a minority government, with Christy Clark in the position of Premier, but the agreement signed between the first ever BC Green Party caucus and the BC NDP could change that. The Legislature has been called back into session for June 22nd, with the debate and vote on a Throne Speech, which will determine if the Liberal Party stays in power, expected by June 29th.

The BCSEA is a non-partisan organisation, and as such focuses on the commitments and policy decisions made by whom ever is forming government. If the NDP does gain power, the agreement signed with the BC Greens highlights a few key areas of collaboration that will impact on climate action and sustainable energy in BC. These include:

  • Sending the Site C hydroelectric project for BCUC review

  • Doing whatever possible to stop the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion project

  • Increasing the carbon tax $5 per tonne, per year, beginning April 1, 2018

  • Act immediately to improve transit and transportation infrastructure in order to reduce emissions, create jobs, and get people home faster; and

  • Establishing both an Emerging Economy Task Force and an Innovation Commission

We will be following the confidence vote results closely in the coming weeks and the decisions on who will form government. While the direction our next provincial government will head is still unknown, all signs are pointing to greater opportunities for sustainable energy as we work to create new economic opportunities and fight climate change.

Fortis BC Community Solar Pilot Project

Can you join the solar energy revolution if you don’t have your own sun-exposed roof? Can you dip in, without having to spend big bucks for a complete system?

The Fortis electric utility in south-central BC wants its customers to be able to say “yes” to both questions.

Fortis is proposing a Community Solar Pilot Project that is now before the BC Utilities Commission for approval. The physical part of the project is a 720 panel, 240 kilowatt solar PV generating facility at the Ellison substation in the north end of Kelowna, estimated to cost $961,000.
