Trudeaus hypocrisy

Please sign today to call on Trudeau to scrap the Saudi arms deal.

While Trudeau condemns Saudi’s human rights record, he is simultaneously supplying the country with weapons for its deadly war on Yemen.

But we can stop this $15 billion arms deal if we act now.

A,

A child dies every ten minutes in Yemen in an unjust war that is lining the pockets of arms dealers across the world.

Prime Minister Trudeau is callously ignoring this human rights tragedy by supporting a $15 billion dollar arms deal between... Canada and Saudi Arabia that will inevitably lead to and cause more brutal deaths.

While Trudeau’s government condemns Saudi’s human rights record it is supporting a brutal war in Yemen with the other. It’s a hypocrisy of epic proportions. There is no justification for giving weapons to a country who will use them to kill civilians, as Saudi Arabia did in an attack on a Doctors Without Borders hospital in 2016.

But we can stop Canada’s support of the carnage. The Saudi arms deal is on the rocks, with Saudi scaling back its order of light armoured vehicles (LAVs). With his government taking a firm stand against Saudi’s human rights record, now is the perfect time to ramp up the pressure for Trudeau to scrap the deal for good.

Tell Trudeau to scrap the Saudi arms deal for good and stop supporting the deaths of thousands of Yemenis.

According to the UN, the war in Yemen is the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. Selling 742 heavily gunned and armoured vehicles to Saudi Arabia not only tarnishes Canada’s image as a humanitarian and peacekeeping nation -- it will lead to thousands more deaths.

Canada has already sold LAVs to Saudi Arabia and in 2016 journalists recorded what was thought to be Canadian-made LAVs being used to suppress protests. Though that was investigated, there are still serious questions into the adequacy of the investigation and the ongoing risk assessment process for military transfers.

Trudeau has pathetically defended the Harper-era deal, saying he had no choice in the sale and that it didn’t violate Canada’s human rights policies. It’s time Trudeau woke up to the fact that the vehicles will be used to uphold this unjust war.

Trudeau has presented himself as a feminist and a champion of human rights. With this war displacing millions -- three-quarters of them being women and children -- his actions are anything but. It’s time we held him to account and let him know that people in Canada do not want this arms deal.

SumOfUs has been holding governments to account on supporting the Saudi war in Yemen. Over 46,000 SumOfUs members signed a petition to call on Britain to stop its arms deals with Saudi Arabia.

Tragedies like this cannot be ignored -- and neither can Canada’s complicity in them. When we work together, I know that we can hold Trudeau to account and finally scrap this brutal arms deal.

Please sign today to call on Trudeau to scrap the Saudi arms deal.
