Sorry not sorry r1 ...

We're coming to you live!

Face to face time with our audience is a rarity so we're very excited to announce our inaugural Nights with The Narwhal event, happening October 24th in Victoria.

Think canapés meets drinks meets high-end conversation about one of the most critical but often overlooked aspects of major resource projects like the Site C dam and the Trans Mountain pipeline: Canada's broken environmental review process.

We want to dig right into the heart of that hot mess with knowledgable minds and so we've assembled an all-star cast for a panel discussion moderated by yours truly.

Our evening's lineup includes:

  • Harry Swain, the man who chaired the Site C dam joint review panel
  • Lana Lowe, the director of lands and resources for Fort Nelson First Nation and PhD candidate in Indigenous law
  • Merle Alexander, hereditary chief of Kitasoo Xai x’ais First Nation and lawyer specializing in Indigenous resource law

It's going to be a unique evening and with only 50 tickets available (and more than half already sold!) it's also an exclusive opportunity.

Get your tickets now.

We're truly looking forward to hobnobbing with you fine folks. And for those of you out of the vicinity, Stream of Consciousness is generously donating their time to livestream the event. Register for the livestream here.

Keep reading for this week's in-depth and original coverage, coming straight to you from The Narwhal's team.

How Alberta is getting away with running deceptive ads on Trans Mountain

By Sharon J. Riley

When a B.C. woman named Susan saw a Trans Mountain advertisement on her television that seemed to be full of inaccurate statements, she followed up with the Advertising Standards Council, because you shouldn't be able to mislead in public ads, right? Turns out there are special exemptions for political advertising. Get your hats on people, we're going to nonsense town. Read more.

Wade Davis: Industrial folly and the fate of northern British Columbia

By Wade Davis

For too many years politicians have told the people of B.C. that the only way we can generate an economy is to tear open our land, tear down our forests and empty our seas. Read more.

Retired BC Hydro engineer calls for independent safety review of Site C dam

By Sarah Cox

Last week’s mushrooming landslide near the Site C dam is a reminder that the project is located in a valley with a history of large landslides. That fact, combined with a change in the design of the dam structure, prompted retired BC Hydro engineer Vern Ruskin to call for an independent safety review of the Site C dam project. Read more.

Out in the Great Lakes, an alarm is sounding

By Greg Mercer

Fish have long been biologists’ best indicators of the Great Lakes’ health, through decades of battles against pollution. Now researchers say they’re telling us a concerning story about climate change, too. Read more. Oh and warning, this story involves the sea demons that are lampreys. We warned you. New battery soaks up carbon dioxide via our friends at Anthropocene. The fizzy math of carbon capture via our friends at Grist. Hey, we all have that friend, the one who's DONEZO with lame email newsletters. The one who just went on an unsubscribe frenzy. We get it. Most emails suck. But this one doesn't. So share this newsletter signup link with a disappointed friend you love. r33 Copyright © 2018 The Narwhal, All rights reserved.
