Friends,
On Monday, as I was watching the House of Commons emergency debate over the IPCC’s landmark 1.5ºC climate report stretch late into the night, one thing became crystal clear – talking about climate change isn’t enough, we need action.
The IPCC is the world's most authoritative voice on climate change. And the report they released last week was explicit: we need to stop expanding fossil fuels, strengthen our climate targets, and take rapid strides to build a 100% renewable energy economy that works for everyone. But, during Monday night’s debate, there were too many empty seats, too many excuses for not doing what’s necessary, and too many MPs that just don’t want to admit the basic reality that we have to keep fossil fuels in the ground if we want... a safe climate.
That’s why, I’m inviting you to push for action and deliver the IPCC’s 1.5ºC report to your Member of Parliament one week from today, on October 24th. Find your MP's office on our mega map, and let us know if you can make it.
Why October 24th? Because it’s one year (well one year less three days) from the next scheduled federal election. And because we need to send a clear message that come election day, we’re looking for leaders who not only listened to the science in the IPCC report but stepped up and took action.
Even after a six hour debate on climate change, it’s clear that our federal leaders are still refusing to make bold commitments that rise to the enormous challenge before us.
So, when we deliver the IPCC’s report on October 24th, we’re not just going to drop it off. We're going to demand commitment. We’re going to demand that our MPs champion legislation that aligns Canada’s climate policies with the urgency called for in the IPCC report. I hope you can be a part of this big day.
Supporting this kind of legislation means strengthening our international climate commitments, stopping fossil fuel expansion, and building a 100% renewable energy economy that respects Indigenous rights, and works for every single person in Canada from Coast Salish Territories to Cape Breton Island.
One of the IPCC report authors called it a “clarion bell” for action. Well, we rang that bell by demanding Monday night’s debate. The question now is who actually steps up and takes action.
With hope,
Aurore
