"The antidote to despair is action"
-- Joan Baez
NOVEMBER 13, 2018
Dear Member of the SCNCC Community,
Those of us who are united under the banner "System Change Not Climate Change" are a varied lot. Although we are not aligned on many questions facing our anti-capitalist, ecosocialist movement, we are all in agreement that the planetary emergency brought on by fossil-fueled capitalism is here now and threatens to catapult us into a condition that some scientists have dubbed "
Hothouse Earth."
The latest UN report gives the world a mere 12 years to reduce its emissions of carbon dioxide by 45% in order to avoid a slide into dangerous, if not cataclysmic, conditions increasingly hostile to the survival of the human species. Barring the magical arrival of currently non-existent technologies, the only way such a reduction is possible is a massive and rapid transformation of society on an unprecedented scale. The mainstream media may finally awaken to the crisis caused by capitalism, but we can expect capitalist politicians and to promote false solutions or a more savage turn to a right as the crisis deepens.
It is up to us to build a mass movement to see that this crisis resolves in the direction of ecological democratic socialism rather than authoritarian neofascist barbarism. Each of the articles we highlight in this newsletter contributes a perspective on how we can move forward to confront this challenge or avoid false solutions that threaten to derail our efforts. We hope you find some inspiration and hope in reading them.

“The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color-line.” —W.E.B. Du Bois What can the twenty-first century ecoleft learn from the protests outside Jerry Brown's Global Climate Action Summit. How can white ecosocialists make common cause with the anticapitalist alliances of climate and environmental justice activists of color?

Faith that environmental catastrophe can best be avoided by technological gadgetry rather than a change in social relationships received a big shot in the arm with the May 2018 publication of the book Energy: A Human History, a book touting the virtues of nuclear power. But will the extreme threat of climate change move closer to resolution by trivializing the menace of nuclear power?

“Deindustrialization.” That’s a word you virtually never hear in the debate around global warming. Not surprising. It’s a word that’s loaded with negative implications. In this article, SCNCC cofounder Richard Smith argues it's time for an honest public conversation about what it will really take to get off fossil fuels and maintain a livable planet.
