December 6 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women in Canada. Established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada, this day marks the anniversary of the 1989 murders of 14 young women at l'Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal.

It is a time for us to reflect on violence against women and to remember those who have died from gender-based violence. It is also a day on which communities can consider concrete actions to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls.

Program & Walk at UVic

Join us to express your commitment to ending gender-based violence. This year the Equity and Human Rights Office has worked with members of the university community to plan a short program and walk on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Classes are officially cancelled from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm.

Memorial at Camosun

Camosun student ambassadors, as part of the Mental Health & Wellness initiative, will hold a memorial event in the Fisher Building at Lansdowne with resources from local support organizations working to eliminate violence against women in our community.

How to be an ally

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence
Begins on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25 and end on International Human Rights Day on December 10. The 16 Days of Activism also includes the National Day of Remembrance on December 6. This is a time to both reflect on violence against women and to take action to end it.
