Victory: Jailed airport workers set free following our campaign r1 ... Özgür Karabulut, now free.Less than two months ago LabourStart launched a campaign in partnership with the Progressive Union of Construction Workers.

The campaign demanded the release from jail of 35 workers at Istanbul's new airport, including Özgür Karabulut, their union president (pictured).

It followed protests the workers had carried out over terrible working conditions including deaths on the site.

8,800 of you supported that campaign in 23 different languages.

Yesterday we received some great news:

The workers have been set free, including Özgür.

Here is the statement we received from their union:

The first hearing of workers, who staged a protest against their bad working conditions and occupational murders in the construction of the New Airport in İstanbul was held on December 5th.

The hearing was held in the dining hall of the courthouse due to the low capacity of the courtrooms.

The court ruled that workers shall be released on probation. The next hearing will be on March 20, 2019.

Özgür Karabulut, President of Progressive Union of Construction Workers is free now. He will be able to witness the birth of his daughter. And he will be back in his duties in the workers' movement.

There will be a long-term struggle for improving the OHS conditions of airport workers.

Thanks to all sisters and brothers who supported our campaign for their freedom and who contributed visibility of working conditions at Istanbul Airport.

And let me add this:

Thank you to everyone who signed up to the campaign, who told others about it, who translated it -- you did a great job. This a huge victory.

Solidarity forever!
