Dear Friends,
People standing up for what they believe in should not be silenced by corporations suing them into submission. After years of activism, this year in BC we celebrated the introduction of anti-SLAPP legislation.
Strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPPs) are when Big Resources (like Kinder Morgan) sue Little Resources (like activist Alan Dutton) in order to silence them. Kinder Morgan slapped Alan and others with a $5.6 million lawsuit, threatening to destroy their economic livelihoods when they dared to voice opposition to oil spills.
It doesn’t matter if the case is weak or even ludicrous, if you can’t afford to defend yourself in court. But the new law will mean that judges in BC will be able to block lawsuits that serve to silence people from going ahead.
Over the next week we are going to celebrate our victories, and continue our fight to fund the future we know is possible.
Now could not be a better time to join us: An anonymous donor has pledged $100,000 in the hopes of inspiring our supporters to match it.
Together, we can fund a future where our fundamental freedoms are protected.
Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Josh Paterson
Executive Director
