... Celebrating a year defending rights and civil liberties. Fund the Future. Day 4: End indefinite solitary confinement

Dear Friends,

The response to our #fundthefuture campaign has been incredible. So far our community has stepped up to raise almost $30,000, and by taking advantage of matching funds, have raised almost $60,000 to support our critical work.

There are only 3 days left to join them and match your gift! Donate today and your money will go twice as far!

Donate here.

One of the cases your gift will support is the fight to end the torturous practice of solitary confinement in Canadian prisons.

BobbyLee Worm, an Indigenous woman who testified in our trial, told of how she spent 1,123 days locked in solitary confinement in a space no larger than an apartment bathroom. That's more than three years.

Can you imagine what it would feel like to have no meaningful contact with anyone for three days or three weeks, never mind three years?

In January of this year, the BC Supreme Court ordered an end to prolonged, indefinite solitary confinement.

Despite the overwhelming evidence of systemic harm, the government is still defending their use of solitary confinement and appealing to overturn our decision. At the same time, they have introduced legislation they say will “end solitary”, but could just continue it by another name.

We cannot let our government ignore the harm done to people in indefinite isolation.

Please help us fight back by making a donation today!

Together, we can lift up the voices and experiences of those who have suffered in solitary confinement, those who are still there, and those whose voices have been forever silenced.

Thank you for your support.

Kate Oja,
Staff Counsel (Litigation)
