                                          Dear Friends,
Many of us have expressed outrage at the separation of migrant families and the detention of children happening in the U.S. Yet many are unaware that, since 2011, hundreds of children have been held indefinitely in immigration detention centres here in Canada by the Canadian Border Services Agency.
Despite new guidelines from the government to reduce the number of children in detention, this inhumane treatment continues in often deplorable conditions.
The CBSA is responsible for policing Canada’s border and for detaining people within Canada. They have vast policing powers, including powers of arrest, detention, and search and seizure.
Unlike every other police force in Canada, there is no independent civilian body to receive complaints, review CBSA’s policies or officer conduct, or investigate allegations of misconduct.
Our matching campaign ends soon. Donate now.The Federal government promised more than two years ago to establish independent oversight for the CBSA - and we expected them to act this year. But as Parliament shuts down for the holidays, they still haven’t followed through.
It looks like, despite their promises, we're in for a fight. In the coming year we will need your help to make sure they finally act.
Help fund a future where human rights are respected and governments are held accountable. Make your year-end donation today.
Sincerely,
Josh Paterson
