It’s that wonderful time of year again where we gather with friends, family, and co-workers to swap stories about the scumbag employers making our lives miserable. As per tradition, we at RankandFile.ca take this time of year to bestow our coveted Scumbag of The Year award on the special scumbag who made workers’ lives hell in 2018.                                                                         FAIRSERVE.CA, CHEF DANIEL HUBER CREATES A NEW ORGANIZING HUB FOR ALBERTA RESTAURANT WORKERS
Daniel Huber is an Edmonton chef and founder of the Alberta Vanguard Association, an advocacy group for the restaurant industry workers. Last week, the Alberta NDP government introduced legislation to ban mandatory high heels in workplaces, a direct result of lobbying from the AVA. Now, the group has partnered with the Alberta Federation of Labour to launch fairserve.ca, a place for workers to share their stories, connect with each other, and participate in organizing and lobbying. During the 2018 Ontario elections, a campaign pamphlet for Progressive Conservative (PC) candidate Raymond Cho was distributed with the words “為人民服務” – “Serve the People” – in bold. The phrase is one of the most iconic Maoist slogans – but in this case, it was used as a crude translation of Doug Ford’s slogan, “For the People.”
While the NDP won the majority of downtown Toronto ridings, they were locked out of the suburbs, where the PC Party rode to a decisive victory across the commuter belt of Mississauga, Markham, Etobicoke, and – to a lesser extent – Scarborough. Read more!

That’s the question on everyone’s lips, with union density at near-record lows. Many unions have begun holding summits for young members or forming local committees, which is great.
But too often they’re missing a step that’s more essential: don’t sell young workers out.
When you settle a two-tier contract that puts new hires on a lower wage scale or trades away their pension, it sends a message: “This union is for us, not for you.” Read more!
