While we are encouraged by the passage of anti-SLAAP legislation in BC, we know the fight to protect people from being silenced by targeted lawsuits is far from over.

That is why we are fighting to bring anti-SLAPP legislation to every province and territory.

We are committed to this fight not only because it is the right thing to do, but because people lacking this protection somewhere can be a direct threat to everyone everywhere due to “forum shopping.”

This is when powerful organizations file lawsuits in jurisdictions without anti-SLAPP legislation, like Manitoba, to target individuals that live in jurisdictions that do have anti-SLAPP legislation, like Ontario. Corporate bullies are already trying to exploit this and we need push back before hard-won protections are undermined.

Journalists, activists and community groups should not live in fear that their free expression could make them a target of costly legal action.
