It’s been another exciting week over at The Narwhal, to follow up the news of our award nominations last week.The best news of all is that in the past week 52 of you signed up to become monthly members of The Narwhal!
Together, you 52 lovely humans will contribute $8,964 in support for our independent journalism over the next year, which makes us a) feel less stressed about the budget and b) feel very optimistic about the future of reader-funded journalism in Canada. Thank you!
Which brings us to our second bit of most excellent news: The Narwhal has become the sole Canadian member of the Institute for Nonprofit News, a network of nearly 200 newsrooms that produce journalism in the public interest.
Other members of the institute include heavyweights like ProPublica, Mother Jones and the Pulitzer Centre on Crisis Reporting. To become a member, a non-profit news outlet must produce high-quality original news reporting and adhere to standards of editorial independence and financial transparency. We’re super proud to be part of this vanguard of non-profit journalism.
As if that wasn’t enough exciting things for one week, there’s more! Remember when we asked you to pitch in to help us pay to get our hands on those communications records between the Alberta Energy Regulator and the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers? Well, you really came through, we paid $643.95 for those documents and we got 626 pages back.
Now we’re excited to bring you our first smokin’ investigation based on those records.
Hidden among the stack of documents was a presentation revealing that the Alberta Energy Regulator projects the number of inactive oil and gas wells in the province will double to 180,000 over the next decade.
And that’s not all we’ve been up to this week! Read on for more on Natural Resources Canada penning a memo about one of our articles, B.C.’s LNG giveaway, eight big issues at stake in Alberta’s election and B.C.’s proposal to ban the sale of gas-powered vehicles.
