Dear friends and supporters,

You only have 5 days left to stop indefinite solitary confinement Bill C-83 from passing in its current form. Help us reach our goal of 1,000 people asking the Senate to reject Bill C-83.

Both the Supreme Court of BC and the Ontario Court of Appeal have ruled that indefinite solitary confinement is unconstitutional.

It is discriminatory against Indigenous people, people living with mental illness, and people with disabilities. Moreover, its damaging effects increase the longer a person is kept isolated, and leaves many individuals traumatized and struggling to reintegrate into community.

Bill C-83 does nothing to change this reality. The bill does not:

  • Establish a hard cap on solitary placements of no more than 15 days - which is already a very long time in isolation
  • Ensure that there is independent, external oversight to review a prisoner's case no later than 5 days after placement in isolation
  • Prohibit the isolation of prisoners with mental illness
  • Guarantee that prisoners will have meaningful human contact
