Joey Hartman retired just over a year ago from her position as president of the Vancouver & District Labour Council, representing 60,000 workers who belong to over 110 affiliated unions in the Vancouver area. Her experience as a labour and community activist began 38 years ago on the picket line during a 14-week Vancouver area civic strike in 1981.
From there she worked on staff with several unions, including almost 20 years with the Hospital Employees’ Union. Throughout, Joey found ways to engage in her other passions and to weave them into her work - labour history, international solidarity and broad based community organizing.
She has been an active supporter of CoDev over the years, and served on the board of directors, including as board chair (2008-2014). In her retirement Joey stays busy with governance work and as a facilitator for labour education.
She is chair two boards; Vancouver Community College and BC Labour Heritage Centre. Joey also sits on the boards for Pacific Blue Cross andThe Council of Canadians.
