Dear friends and supporters,
Over 1,000 supporters have successfully asked Senate to reject solitary confinement Bill C-83 in its current form and our voices were heard!
Last week, Bill C-83 was amended by the Standing Committee for Social Affairs, Science, and Technology to include a judge’s approval to keep a prisoner in isolation for more than 48 hours.
But the fight is not over yet.
While these amendments are a step in the right direction, they do not guarantee that prisoners will not be held indefinitely in solitary confinement.
Despite judicial oversight, the bill does not establish a hard time limit on solitary placements of 15 days or less, allowing for prisoners to remain in prolonged, indefinite solitary confinement.
The court decisions on solitary confinement are crystal clear – prolonged, indefinite solitary confinement is unconstitutional and must end.
Yet, in attempting to pass Bill C-83 as is, the government is doubling down on their system of institutionalized torture. I am asking you to do everything in your power to prevent that from happening.
Contact Your Senator NowThank you for your continued support. Together, we can end this torturous practice.
Sincerely,
Josh Paterson
