... The Protest Papers

Dear friends and supporters,

Spying on people who are protesting government actions is an attack on freedom of expression. It creates a climate of fear that chills democratic participation and stifles individuals’ willingness to exercise their fundamental right to protest.

That’s what we argued in 2014, when we alleged that Canada’s security agencies had been spying on Indigenous and community groups opposed to the Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline project, and sharing this information with the National Energy Board (NEB) and oil companies.

Questioning the authorities should not be considered a threat. Donate to defend our right to free expression.

After a secret hearing and years of fighting the gag orders imposed on the witnesses, we can finally share much more of we know with you.

The Security Intelligence Review Committee (SIRC), which oversees one of Canada’s spy agencies, ruled that there was no wrongdoing by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS). We believe, however, that SIRC’s own report clearly supports the conclusion that illegal spying and information sharing has taken place. And now that we are finally able to share the documents from the hearing, you can decide for yourself.

The documents include thousands of pages of information collected by CSIS. But they are highly redacted (blacked out), and we need your help to challenge these restrictions so we can find out the true extent of CSIS’s activities. We need to raise $5,000 in the next 7 days, to challenge the SIRC ruling that there was no wrongdoing on the part of Canada’s spy agencies.

This is about our right to question those in power. Donate now to protect our right to protest.

Thank you for your support. Together, we can hold Canada’s spy agencies accountable.

Sincerely,

Meghan McDermott
