Many of us feel a responsibility to step up and do our part for what we believe is important. But imagine a world where such actions led to the government tracking your movements, infiltrating your meetings, and documenting your activities. Imagine standing up for what you believe in, and then discovering that exercising your right to free expression has labelled you a possible public threat?
That’s exactly what happened to Indigenous groups and community and environmental groups opposing the Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline Project. Recently released documents from spy agency oversight body SIRC showed that Canada’s spy agency has collected vast amounts of information related to the project, and shared it with not only the National Energy Board, but also oil companies.
SIRC ruled that there was no wrongdoing (a decision that we are challenging), but even they recognize how much the spectre of this surveillance chills our right to free expression.
Protest is political participation. Our ability to speak out against injustice is one of our most important Charter-protected rights. We should be able to speak up and express our opinions without the fear that the state may start spying on our personal communications.
We must be able to voice our dissent without the threat of government surveillance. Together, we can hold our government and its spy agencies accountable.
Sincerely,
Meghan McDermott
