Dear friends and supporters,

The BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA) was the gold standard of information rights when it was adopted in 1992, but its now 2019 and the law has failed to keep up with rapid technological change. Today, the law falls far short of government transparency and privacy protections.

We are launching a petition with our friends at the BC Freedom of Information and Privacy Association to call on the BC government to keep their commitment to overhaul FOIPPA.

Public institutions frequently avoid transparency by failing to create records or destroying them in order to avoid the possibility of release.

We are hearing from many concerned citizens who are not able to get the information they are looking for or who have found their privacy rights have been breached by a public body with little or no recourse.

We are calling on the government to:

  1. Legislate the “Duty to document,” and take it seriously.
  2. Expand the scope of FOIPPA to more government bodies to avoid transparency black holes.
  3. Expand the investigative capacity for the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner and create stronger deterrents for non-compliance.
  4. Implement Mandatory Privacy Breach Notification to help the public protect themselves if a breach occurs.
