
FORESTRY WORKERS DOWN SAWS TO STOP CUTS

Sawmill workers across Vancouver Island have been picketing for a fair contract with Western Forest Products since the Canada Day long weekend. The strike by 3000 members of United Steelworkers Local 1-1937 is in opposition to WFP’s proposed clawback of holidays, pensions, seniority rights and many other contract areas. The workers are also striking for a living wage – the company has proposed a two-tier wage structure – and against a strict drug policy that WFP is using to target employees who have stood up to it.
The strike began after USW members delivered an overwhelming 98.8% strike vote at the end of June and delivered a 72-hour notice to the company. Read more!

NO JUSTICE FOR JANITORS AT LUCIANO JANITORIAL SERVICES

“No one in their right mind would ever accept this deal,” says Jorge Villa, an organizer with Service Employers International Union (SEIU) Local 2, of the proposal tabled by Luciano Janitorial Services.
A crowd of janitors and their community allies gathered outside 250/270 Wellington Street – two soaring condominiums – in downtown Toronto’s lucrative Entertainment District. They are rallying in support of 5 cleaners who have been locked out by their employer for over a week. Read more!
Some 60 protesters came out the afternoon of July 24 to picket the two entrances to Halifax’s historic Citadel Hill, the location of a fundraiser for the provincial Liberal party.
Fight for 15 activists reminded fundraiser attendants and tourists alike that poverty in Nova Scotia is rampant, and that our minimum wage is one of the lowest in Canada.
