Last week we disrupted the Harper Conservatives’ 2014 PR launch by crashing the Prime Minister’s first public appearance of the year. Instead of airing Harper’s scripted soundbytes, the media and the country were talking about climate change and media muzzling.
See the impact in this new video.
The debate that was stirred by our action forced a Conservative MP to publicly admit that climate change is connected to extreme weather events like the Alberta floods and the Ontario ice storm. As CBC reported, this was “a first by a member of the federal Conservatives.” 1 This MP even acknowledged a core principle of climate justice, that the most devastating impacts are being experienced by “developing countries.”
You can see how this unfolded live on national TV in this new video.
With headlines like “Climate change reveals cracks in Conservative caucus” 2 the Harper Government is not happy. So now the Conservatives are coming after us like never before. While the RCMP quickly announced there would be no charges against us, one Conservative Senator says he hopes to bring forward a Private Member’s bill to “beef up the law” because he believes the four of us who organized this action “should face indictable offences with serious fines and/or imprisonment.” 3 They are trying to scare the public away from engaging in these tactics - because positive societal advances have traditionally come from the people power that is summoned by direct action. They’re scared of what you might do.
The response from the SHD community has been inspiring. You've made it clear we won't let them stop us. Across the country people have been stepping up and signing our direct action pledge. We’re more than halfway to our goal!
If four of us could have this impact with a direct action planned within 24 hours, imagine what 500 of us could achieve together in the next year!
Please join us by signing our direct action pledge.
With ferocity and hope,
Sean, Brigette, Sara, Sarah, Victoria and the whole SHD team
