Dear friends,

Our survey on freedom of expression during the recent federal election closes on November 21st. Can you help us hear from more organizations by forwarding this reminder?

The survey can be filled out here.

We’ve already heard from organizations doing work towards a variety of missions in the arts, environmental conservation, workers’ rights, women’s rights, and anti-poverty efforts, as well as a religious institution and multi-issue grassroots advocacy organizations.

We’re hopeful that hearing from even more organizations will prepare us to launch robust next steps aiming at clarifying and improving the law, so that organizations – particularly small and volunteer-run organizations – won't be scared to speak up in the next election.

For decades, the BCCLA has stood up for freedom of expression.

During the recent federal election, we’ve heard concerning reports about how organizations across Canada are self-censoring due to complex election legislation, confusion regarding Elections Canada information, and the administrative burden of complying with third party advertising rules.

When the current federal election legislation was developed, the BCCLA raised concerns about a chill on free expression. Now, we want to hear from organizations to make sure we understand how the law is playing out on the ground.

Elections are a critical time to debate important issues from coast to coast to coast. We believe democracy is stronger when organizations with policy expertise and who work with people directly affected by these important issues can contribute to that debate.

By hearing from organizations across the country – including grassroots groups without a formal legal entity – we can ground our advocacy and next steps in the real impacts of current elections law and Elections Canada practices.

Please help us stand up for freedom of expression and democratic debate by sharing our survey today.
