Hi friend,
Despite his image as a “climate leader," Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is still pushing the Trans Mountain tar sands pipeline – a toxic project that, if built, would not only make it impossible for Canada to meet its climate commitments, but would increase oil tanker traffic 700%, likely spelling the end for endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales. There are only 73 of them left.
Protect the orca whales: Use our tool to tell Justin Trudeau to stop the pipeline once and for all.
TAKE ACTIONOrcas use underwater soundwaves to see their surroundings the way that people use lightwaves to see. For an orca, having more of these massive tankers in their waters would be like having a strobe light flashing in your face as you're preparing dinner. Increasing the number of oil tankers could spell the end for the remaining orcas of the Salish Sea.
The pro-pipeline crowd would have us believe that... the pipelines and tankers are safe. But in reality, expanding this pipeline and tanker project would almost guarantee a massive oil spill. The City of Vancouver estimates the likelihood of a massive oil spill at 87% if this project were to go through. If that were to happen, it could doom these remaining 73 orcas into extinction.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Send a message directly to Trudeau now.
People are often surprised to hear that Justin Trudeau is a pipeline pusher. But it's true. First, he approved the pipeline in 2016 without getting full consent from Indigenous nations or local communities, breaking a major election promise; then when the pipeline's owner, Kinder Morgan, announced that it was pausing the pipeline expansion, the Canadian Prime Minister gave the Texas-based company billions of Canadian tax dollars to buy the pipeline outright.
We know that it can be easy to feel discouraged when a supposed “climate leader” approves such a toxic project. But we also know that it’s times like this that bring people together to create the long-lasting, transformational change that we need to tackle this climate crisis. Every time the pipeline gets sent back to the drawing board, we get closer to stopping it for once and for all.
Send Trudeau a message he can't ignore.
For several years now, the Stand.earth community has been working with Indigenous nations, local communities, and other environmental organizations to stop the Trans Mountain pipeline. Together, we’ve sent tens of thousands of letters to politicians, made hundreds of phone calls to Trudeau, showed up at rallies in the thousands, donated to support the Kwekwecnewtxw Watch House, and even risked arrest through principled civil disobedience up on Burnaby Mountain. In 2018, this movement forced Texas oil giant Kinder Morgan to abandon this pipeline expansion. We just never thought that Prime Minister Trudeau’s government would use billions of taxpayer dollars to buy Trans Mountain outright.
Now it’s time to once more show the Canadian government the strength of opposition to Trans Mountain. History has shown that the people united and mobilized leads to large-scale change. None of us can do everything; but all of us can do something – and that is exactly what it’s going to take.
Write to Trudeau now and tell him that building this pipeline is wrong.
In solidarity,
Sven Biggs
