MST Futurism: Decolonizing the City through a Matriarchal Lens

Thursday, 3 December 2020 from 18:00 PST-20:00 PST

Online eventhttps://www.eventbrite.ca/e/mst-futurism-decolonizing-the-city-through-a-matriarchal-lens-registration-128563339409?aff=ebdssbeacMST Futurism - uplifting and celebrating xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) visions for the future of what is currently known as Vancouver. “MST people have lived in these lands since Time Immemorial. We have never ceded or surrendered title to our lands, rights to our resources, or authority to make decisions within our territory. Since 1850 (When Vancouver was first annexed) MST voices have been silenced and our villages dismantled. In 1876 we were forced onto reservations and watched as the city was built around us. That was only 170 years ago. Today we are reclaiming agency by re-centering the future of this city in MST values, relations and visions. We invite you to hear from incredible MST Host Nation thought leaders to re-envision the built form centred in right relation to our land, waters and skies.” - Sierra Tasi Baker, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw & xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, MSc, BEnvD, Indigenous Urban Design Consultant and Project CuratorPANELISTS:Matriarch Chief Janice George, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw, Auntie Orene Askew, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw, Matriarch Debra Sparrow, xʷməθkʷəy̓əm and Matriarch Angela George, səl̓ilwətaɁɬ YOUTH VISIONARIES:Ocean Hyland, səl̓ilwətaɁɬ, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw & Xwchíyò:m, Salia Joseph, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw & Snuneymuxw, and Cyler Point Sparrow, xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, and Sekawnee Baker Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw, xʷməθkʷəy̓əm & Tla'aminYOUR HOSTS:Sierra Tasi Baker,Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw & xʷməθkʷəy̓əm and Paisley Eva Nahanee, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw.HONOURING AFRO-FUTURISM
“Afrofuturism is the reimagining of a future filled with arts, science and technology seen through a black lens.” - Jamie Broadnax, Huffpost, 2018.Our hands are up to the Black community. As indigenous people we choose to honour these incredible visions as we move forward with Indigenous Futures and MST Futures and how we can work together. In particular we are excited to work with Squamish Nation and Afro-Indigenous leader Orene Askew, and Afro-Futurism Historian Krystal Paraboo to continue these conversations.Krysal Paraboo has developed a video outlining the history of Afro-Futurism as a starting point for navigating these conversations. Disability Foundation's Accessible Community Forum: Transportation in BC
December 4th Friday at 13:00 PST
Do you feel you have equal access to public and private transportation services in British Columbia?Presented by the Disability Foundation in partnership with Lyft ridesharing and the ConnecTra Society, this online community forum is bringing organizations together to learn from the disability community about barriers to getting around. Are you a British Columbian with a disability? We encourage you to fill out our survey by November 27th at disabilityfoundation.org/surveyInitially highlighted in outreach initiatives conducted by the SCI-Network, accessible transportation has been consistently identified among the top three factors stopping BC from being a fully accessible and inclusive society. With 1 in 5 or 6.2 million Canadians having one or more disabilities, the need for reliable accessible transportation is well founded. The forum will build on this knowledge base to broaden understanding of needs, generate possible solutions to explore, and ally resources. All this in an open, honest, and inclusive dialogue between a panel of organizational representatives and our beautiful province's diverse disability community. You are the expert of your experience. Be heard.
If you require any assistance to take the survey, register, or attend this event - please email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Closed captioning will be available.

Free Webinar: AFRICOM & Human Rights in Africa
Friday, 4 December 2020 from 11:00 PST-13:00 PSTOnline eventhttps://actionnetwork.org/events/free-webinar-africom-human-rights-in-africa?clear_id=true
Women’s International League for Peace & Freedom-US Section, Black Alliance for Peace, & World BEYOND War invite you to attend this free webinar on the United States African Command (AFRICOM) and Human Rights in Africa, on Friday, Dec. 4 at 11am PT, 2pm ET, 8pm Nigeria time. The webinar will feature first-hand reports from WILPF women describing what effects AFRICOM is having on their respective nations: Joy Onyesoh, the President of WILPF International will speak about Nigeria, Sylvie Ndongmo, the Africa Region representative of WILPF will speak about Cameroon, Marie-Claire Faray, currently living in the UK will speak about the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Christine Odera, Commonwealth Youth Peace Ambassador Network - Kenya Country Coordinator (CYPAN), will speak about Kenya. Other featured speakers include writer and author Margaret Kimberley, representing the Black Alliance for Peace, and their initiative: Out of Africa: Shut Down AFRICOM, and investigative journalist Amanda Sperber who has reported widely on Somalia. Why are we concerned about the militarization of Africa by AFRICOM?The U.S. military established AFRICOM on October 1, 2008. They claim that combat operations in Africa are to counter violent extremist organizations which they say are finding safe haven throughout African countries. However, the truth is that the U.S. uses military force to impose control of African land, resources and labor to service the needs of U.S. multi-national corporations and the wealthy in the United States. When AFRICOM was established in the months before Barack Obama assumed office as the first Black President of the United States, a majority of African nations—led by the Pan-Africanist government of Libya—rejected AFRICOM, forcing the new command to instead work out of Europe. But with the U.S. and NATO attack on Libya that led to the destruction of that country and the murder of its leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, corrupt African leaders began to allow AFRICOM forces to operate in their countries and establish military-to-military relations with the United States. Despite the Pentagon's claims that AFRICOM has a "light footprint," recent documents reveal that the U.S. has at least 29 military bases in 15 countries across the continent.

DOGWAB 11- Winter WarmupDay of Giving Within Arbitrary Borders
Saturday, 5 December 2020 from 16:30 PST-21:00 PST400 Industrial Ave, Vancouver, BC V6A 2P3, Canada

"Why are you doing this?"
Thanks for asking.
Started as a response to context-devoid Canada Day 150 celebrations that ignore marginalized groups and reinforce oppression, colonialism, and many other stigmatized phobias/judgement based harms inflicted our fellow humans, DOGWAB will focus on giving meals, grooming/personal items, socks, and many other useful items to people who should never be without these items for a reason so crass and shamefully presented as not having financial access or socially acceptable presentations of struggle or illness.
Though DOGWAB (Day of Giving Within Arbitrary Borders) is political in origination, the clients of our pop up free markets only have the experience of pure, no strings attached sharing because community is for everyone who is privileged to have it naturally or for those that desire it as a component of their own self-care.
Please offer us help in the form of donated new items per the list above, cash donations, or donations of labour on during the days before, setup/sorting the day before, 4 to 5 hours before the give heating and packaging food, and then the give itself from 430pm to possibly as late as 930 pm.*EVENT WILL BE MASKED AND DISTANCED, with food professionally prepackaged in a licensed facility.*In search of: $2500 donations for bulk materials, eco-focussed food packaging, plus additional items not covered by physical donations. etransfer donations can be made to This email address is being protected from spambots. 300 pairs of socks
400+ Hot meals - 3 part including hot drink and water
300 Bottles of Water
-so that's a good start! We are aiming for a minimum of 300 meals, toiletries, socks, and other useful items, as well as donations to support a goal of 1500-2000$ to make an exceptionally helpful event. Organizer's business will donate all (vegan) food and labour around it, as well as other items. If you find it acceptable for you to do so, please only focus on the needed items so we get the widest diversity of items to give. Of course we will hear any suggestion you have as well.
This event is inclusive, intersectional in its intention, and not designed to be anything else other than pure giving, interaction, and showing love to those we serve. We do not dispense advice, judgement, or visibly imbue any of these gestures with politics. That said, the organizer remains committed to recognizing all oppression is connected and will prefer to decline serving food and products that are not plant-based. We are not there to do outreach for our own causes, but we may become better advocates through interacting and serving those we may try to advocate for in the future. If you have inclusivity or other support needs, please reach out and we will do our utmost to accommodate. All of the DOGWAB events have been run entirely on volunteer time and resources, and is not directly intentionally affiliated with any org, business, or charity, by design. The events are a chance to speak to members of the community who are not heard from in as full a manner as they are rightfully owed, and provide a gesture of pure kindness to those who would like to utilize the store.
The give will organize at the address listed, and then proceed via foot or driving (depending) to a location or two in the DTES. If you want to visit a specific location, feel free to suggest it. We usually end up the event on Main and Hastings on the side of the Royal Bank. See less
