Cancel Keystone XL

Tell Trudeau to listen to climate science and back down on Keystone XL. r1

Paov,

Yesterday, news broke that President-Elect Joe Biden plans to cancel the Keystone XL pipeline’s Presidential permit on his first day in office.1

I’m sure you were as delighted by this news as I was. Though I still won’t fully believe it until the deed is done, Indigenous land defenders and the climate movement have fought Keystone XL for over a decade and it's exciting to know victory is finally in sight.

Biden’s decision shows just how short-sighted it is for Liberal and Conservative politicians across Canada - from Prime Minister Trudeau to Conservative Party Leader Erin O’Toole and Alberta Premier Jason Kenney - to keep wasting public money propping up fossil fuel projects. Instead, they should embrace the clean energy transition we need and put that money towards supporting communities, families, and workers. Last night, Trudeau’s ambassador to the U.S released a statement reaffirming her support for Keystone XL and pushing the false claim that the pipeline is compatible with Canada’s climate goals.

Can you take a minute to tell Prime Minister Trudeau to listen to science and back down on KXL?

We know that continuing to expand the... fossil fuel industry undermines any progress we might make on reducing emissions from other parts of our economy. Even the federal government’s own agencies, the Canada Energy Regulator and Parliamentary Budget Office, recently projected that both KXL and the Trans Mountain pipeline will be unnecessary in a world where we ramp up climate action by even a modest degree.

It couldn't be clearer that it's time to stop trying to revive the fossil fuel industry and begin investing in a Green New Deal that retools our economy to tackle the climate crisis while creating millions of good jobs for all.

Tell Trudeau it’s time to choose: either lead the way on climate action or get out of the way.

Thanks to years of work by the climate movement, the dangerous political consensus that what’s good for the fossil fuel industry is good for Canadians is starting to break down. Green Party Leader Annamie Paul and NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh have said they welcome the news about KXL’s impending cancellation.2 With a new common sense up for grabs, it’s more important than ever that we keep up the pressure and spread the message: building pipelines and solving the climate crisis don’t mix.

In solidarity,

Cam
