We’re almost there! Help us address the crisis in long-term care r1 ... Long-term care petition Dear Friend,

Last summer, the Council of Canadians launched a petition calling for measures that would protect residents and workers in long-term care from the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 19,000 people have added their names to this important cause. Add your name A lot has changed since we first launched this petition. We’ve seen some positive new developments in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, including multiple vaccines that have been proven to help prevent COVID infection. The government has also made some positive changes when it comes to long-term care, agreeing in last autumn’s throne speech that national standards for long-term care are necessary.

Unfortunately, not enough has changed when it comes to the treatment of seniors in long-term care. Of the staggering 21,674 deaths due to COVID in Canada, 72 per cent were in long-term care, according to data provided by freelance journalist Nora Loreto. In B.C. and in Ontario, data shows that the outbreaks have been worse in for-profit homes.

Will you sign our petition calling on the federal government to act urgently to ensure all seniors and workers have the care they need?

When our petition received its first 10,000 signatures, the Council met with the Minister of Health’s office to bring your demands to the decision makers. When we reach 20,000 signatures, we’re going to request a follow-up meeting – and this time, we hope to meet with Minister Patty Hajdu directly.

Will you help us reach our goal? Add your name Thank you again for your signature, and for all you do to support residents and workers in long-term care.

I’m confident we can reach 20,000 signatures with your help.
