Today's newspapers carried an unusual headline, but one we hope to see again and again: AIPAC, the fearsome lobbying group that advocates unconditional U.S. support for Israeli policies, has suffered a humbling defeat.

AIPAC had been making a heavy push for a bill calling for new U.S. sanctions on Iran even as diplomatic talks between the two countries are underway, making the prospect of war more likely. When Senate Republicans on Thursday called for an immediate vote on the bill, AIPAC, apparently fearful of a humiliating defeat, issued a statement opposing the move for a vote.

Just days earlier, people like you made it possible for Jewish Voice for Peace to run a prominent ad opposing the bill on Politico.com, a high-profile website catering to DC insiders. This enabled us to send a strong message: AIPAC does not speak for U.S. Jews. Just as important, this proves that AIPAC can not only be challenged: It can be defeated.
