Supreme Court

Carbon pricing decision is both a win and a call to action

Last week, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that the federal government’s carbon pricing plan is constitutional and provinces can’t choose to opt out of a federal climate plan.

This important decision will protect future climate action at the national level. But the carbon pricing policy itself is far from the aggressive action we desperately need.

Now is the time to strengthen the federal climate plan, and for governments to cooperate across jurisdictions to build a just transition.

Read more about the decision and our intervention here. Then, sign our petition demanding that Bill C-12 (the Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act) be strengthened!

Transit passenger

Time is running out for public transit

Thanks to our advocacy work with other allies in the Keep Transit Moving coalition, the federal government made a much-needed investment in public transit last year through the Safe Restart Agreement.

But that agreement expires today, March 31, and our transit systems are on the brink.

Read more about how the end of the Safe Restart Agreement risks transit jobs and the jobs of frontline workers.

Take action and call the Minister of Finance and your MP to ensure the government includes a new safe restart agreement for transit in the upcoming federal budget!

Blue Communities

Blue Communities and World Water Day

London, Ontario, is now the 48th Blue Community in Canada!

Last Tuesday, London’s city council voted to join dozens of other communities around the world in becoming a Blue Community. Our London Chapter was instrumental in building unanimous support through various city committees over many years and their hard work and tenacity was acknowledged in the city council meeting.

Also raise a glass of water to celebrate two new universities becoming blue: Brescia University College in Ontario and Philipps University of Marburg in Germany.

The Blue Communities Project is part of the Council of Canadians’ long history of fighting for clean, publicly accessible water for all.

We want to also thank all our chapters, members, donors, and supporters who helped us mark World Water Day this year, on March 22.

Thousands sent letters to the federal government, demanding that it end drinking water advisories in First Nations. And hundreds of young students and Council supporters sent Prime Minister Trudeau personal messages inside water droplets.

Can Albertans say no to coal?

8 questions about Alberta’s coal policy consultation

After its about-face on the province’s coal mining policy, the Alberta government has finally kicked off its promised public consultations around a new policy.

But, unsurprisingly, there are major gaps in the announcement and the process leaves key questions unanswered.

Read our take here on why the consultation misses the mark. Then, join the Alberta Beyond Coal campaign by getting a lawn sign and calling on the Alberta government to stop all coal mine exploration and development now!

We are also calling on the federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Jonathan Wilkinson, to designate the Tent Mountain Project for a federal review. Click here to learn more about that project and write to the minister.
