Announcing our plan to respond to the climate emergency

Last night, for the first time in a long time, I was hopeful about our future in this climate crisis.

Yesterday, I joined the 350 Canada team as we hosted a Mass Call on the Climate Emergency.

We announced our plans to hold a massive day of action next week on Thursday, July 29th, to bring the impacts of the climate crisis right to the doorstep of our federal leaders. Hundreds of people from coast to coast joined in.

We invited everyone there to host an action in their community. The response was incredible. By the end of the hour, dozens of events across the country had filled up our action map.

Now, the question is, will you stand with us as well? We need all hands on deck. Canada is literally on fire and it’s up to us to make sure our politicians start acting... like it. Check out the map today to find an action near you or sign up to host one in your community.

As of yesterday, there were over 900 wildfires burning across Canada impacting air quality in nearly every province and territory. For the first time ever, the entire country is covered in wildfire smoke -- including, where I live in Toronto. As if that wasn’t enough, this summer has brought unprecedented heatwaves, floods, and other extreme climate-driven extreme weather events to communities across the country.

We don’t have to accept this new reality of a climate crisis that gets worse and worse every year. Especially with a potential federal election coming up in just a few weeks.

We have the power to take action in this moment and demand that our politicians put out the fire by immediately ending all fossil fuel expansion and delivering Canada’s much-needed Just Transition legislation.

On July 29th, we’re going to make sure they feel the heat by delivering our demands for climate action to Members of Parliament across the country just days before Trudeau is expected to call a snap federal election. There’s so much power when we act together. It’s clear that the Trudeau government senses that climate is a critical issue for people across the country. They rushed to pass Canada’s Climate Accountability Bill last month. And this week, they announced that they are beginning a consultative process for Canada’s Just Transition. Neither of these actions would have been taken by the Liberal government if people like you hadn’t spoken up and taken action to demand ambitious legislation for climate accountability and a just transition.
