Our public transit systems are in crisis r1 ... VoteTransit2021 Dear Friend,

Our public transit systems are at a crossroads. The pandemic has hit our transit systems hard and we need the next Parliament to ensure they have the funding they need to keep operating.

This federal election, will you ask your local candidates to end the financial crisis faced by our transit systems? Click here to email your local candidates to ask them to support a just recovery for public transit. Because of decreased ridership during the pandemic, many public transit systems from coast to coast lack the funds to keep operating without service cuts. And Greyhound has shut down its intercity bus service entirely.

This is a crisis that the federal government can and must fix. It’s also an opportunity for a just recovery for public transit that addresses the many crises we face at the same time.

We can’t tackle the climate crisis without expanding public transit. Transportation is currently one of the top sources of greenhouse gas emissions in Canada, making up a quarter of the country’s emissions. Public transit is also a vital tool to promote our shared goals for social inclusion, public health, and economic opportunity.

But defending and expanding public transit can’t happen without challenging corporate power. And to do that, we need to build people power – through community organizing and through people like you and me taking action, together.

That’s why the Council of Canadians joined a coalition of allies last year to build a Green New Deal for public transit from coast to coast. The Keep Transit Moving coalition includes grassroots transit advocacy groups, environmental and social justice organizations, and transit workers.

This election, the coalition has been urging candidates and parties to make public transit a priority. We’ve called on them to commit to: urgently needed operational funding; a pan-Canadian, public, intercity bus service; leadership and accountability on social justice, public health, and addressing the climate crisis; reliable public transit infrastructure funding; and more accessible transit.

You and I know that we can build a just recovery and a Green New Deal for public transit. r71 | Add us to your address book Facebook Twitter Instagram Website Copyright © 2021 Council of Canadians, All rights reserved.
