It’s election time. We’re here to help

We know, we wish this election race had been a bit more, um, inspiring. The stakes, though? They couldn’t be higher

Dear Narwhals,

Let’s be real: this hasn’t exactly been an attention-grabbing federal election. I probably don’t have to tell all of you why it should have been, but just in case: the planet is on fire.

So, what are our politicians going to do about it? Over the course of this campaign, our journalists have been cutting through the noise to break down exactly what’s at stake and what all the major parties are proposing on key environmental issues.

Editor-in-chief Emma Gilchrist broke down where the Liberals, Conservatives, NDP and Greens stand on everything from climate targets to a responsible energy transition.

B.C. investigative reporter Sarah Cox took a closer look at all the promises to eliminate fossil fuel subsidies — and why the definition of a subsidy is as clear as mud.

Freelancer Ali Raza asked all the parties what their plans are to wind down fossil fuel production in the wake of a major new study saying we need to keep 80 per cent of Canadian oil, gas and coal in the ground. Turns out, no party could explain how they’d achieve this.

Northwest B.C. reporter Matt Simmons delved into the challenges behind the cross-party promises to electrify our transportation sector.

Soon-to-be Narwhal Fatima Syed brought a keen eye to a Conservative proposal to criminalize civil disobedience that disrupts the oil and gas industry.

And last but not least, B.C. reporter Stephanie Wood got us all caught up on a sexy emissions fix that’s having a moment during this campaign: nature-based climate solutions.

We hope these stories will prove valuable resources as you prepare to head to the polls on Monday. And keep an eye out for more in-depth politics coverage once the ballots are counted.
