About Our Presenters:

Alex Hartzog (he/him) was the SCNCC journalism intern this summer and concentrated on reporting and writing the series on plastic pollution that informs this webinar. He’ll graduate from Ithaca College in New York State this December with a degree in journalism and minors in linguistics and education studies. He’s also working and podcasting long-form stories about labor issues for WICB-FM. Conversant in Japanese, he’ll be looking for a job in the new year and is open to offers.

Maura Stephens (she/xe/ella) is an independent journalist and an antiracism, environmental, labor, and peace activist — or jactivist — as well as a theatre artist, educator, creative writer, and editor. A lifetime sustainability advocate and anticapitalist, for many years she ran an organic farm in central New York. Maura has written hundreds of articles and white papers and taught on subjects ranging from climate change to the invasion of Iraq to vermiculture — subjects that are connected in one way or many. A cofounder of the Coalition to Protect New York, FrackbustersNY, and other grassroots organizations, she’s a current member of the System Change Not Climate Change coordinating committee and the National Writers Union.
