While the database on animal behavioral... science grows and sled dog tourism increases in scale, necessary governance over the treatment of dogs has not kept up. The animal cruelty section of Canada’s Criminal Code has gone virtually unchanged since 1892. Protections for dogs under The Alberta Animal Protection Act remain vague and outdated as the majority of responsible dog handling and ownership regulations are typically governed by municipalities.

This essentially leaves the welfare of dogs used for sledding ungoverned. While the City of Calgary, for example, prohibits dog owners from leaving dogs tethered while unsupervised, owners of sled dogs operating on public land have been known to keep hundreds of dogs chained for months at a time. This is certainly the case at Alberta’s commercial sled dog kennels, as documented here.

Science is clear that the practice of tethering is extremely distressing to dogs. We also know that a lack of oversight in breeding and euthanasia practices can lead to negligence within the industry as demonstrated in Whistler. B.C.’s 2010 mass culling. Until drastically updated protections, extending to dogs used for sledding, are in place that demonstrate Canadians’ growing ethic of evidence-based animal welfare, we urge Canalta Group to be a leader by stepping away from dog sledding and promoting only compassionate and humane activities.

By removing sled dog tours from its promotional catalogue, Canalta will join a growing list of champions for humane and modernized treatment of dogs.

  • Fairmont Hotels is no longer promoting dog sledding to its Canadian guests and has terminated its partnerships with third-party sled tour operators.
  • The Vancouver Humane Society has gathered and sent over 4500 letters to the British Columbia Minister of Agriculture, asking for updates to the B.C. Sled Dog Standards of Care Regulation and is urging the public to boycott commercial dog sledding activities.
  • The Iditarod, the world’s largest dog sledding event, has been dropped by virtually all of its major sponsors, including Jack Daniels, Coca-Cola, Alaska Airlines, Wells Fargo, Chrysler, and Exxon Mobil.

Canalta, we do not support cruelty to animals for the sake of entertainment, and we ask that you stop supporting it too.
