Dear Friend,
In 2019, we had a historic win when the BC Court of Appeal ruled that the federal laws that permitted prolonged solitary confinement in Canada’s federal prisons were inhumane and unconstitutional.
But the fight against this unjust system is not over.
The government claims that solitary confinement has been banned. But wardens at federal prisons continue to isolate prisoners in long-term solitary confinement, under different processes and names such as lockdowns and restrictive movement routines.
That is why we are going back to court to fight against solitary confinement. Will you donate today to help us fight for the rights of people in prison?
DONATEDuring lockdowns and restrictive movement routines, wardens at federal prisons lock down entire institutions or set schedules that isolate people to their cells for days,... weeks and months at a time. Many times, prisons are locked down for administrative reasons, like staff shortages or construction.
People in prison need meaningful human contact. Without it, they struggle with severe and chronic depression and anxiety.
The United Nations considers s causes physical, psychological, social and spiritual trauma, and even for people who were previously healthy, it can be so torturous, it exacerbates mental illness.
No one should ever have to experience the torture of prolonged solitary confinement. These practices must end. That’s why we are going back to court.
Please make a donation today. Join us in fighting for the rights of people in prison.
For society to change, we need to tackle problems on multiple fronts. We are tackling this problem in the courts, and you can join us in standing up for prisoners’ rights.
Stand up for human rights. Stand up for dignity. Please make a donation today.
Sincerely,
Grace Pastine (She/her/hers)
Director of Litigation
