If this year has proved anything, it’s that the crises we face go a lot deeper than Donald Trump.

Whether it’s a warming planet or a Congress gridlocked by moneyed interests, the challenges of our time need to be addressed at their roots. And that requires journalism that questions the official story to expose the corruption and greed that those in power don’t want revealed.

But right now, journalism is being pummeled by social media algorithms that reward superficial and polarizing ragebait over substantive investigative reporting — setting off a race to the bottom among outlets forced to compete for clicks.

There are plenty of media outlets devoted to telling their audiences exactly what they want to hear.
