The climate clock is running out: Email your MP!

Ask them to support a just transition now. ...
Dear friend,
As we wrote to you last month, our just transition campaign has been
making big waves on Parliament Hill.
Since we launched the campaign,
three MPs have already tabled our just transition micro-petition in Parliament and at least 16 others have committed to tabling it too. More than 100 people in over 40 communities across the country are still organizing petition drives.
Will you send an urgent message to your MP to help spread these waves even further?
Our demand is simple: we can’t afford any more delays. We need just transition legislation that drastically reduces our emissions, ends all fossil fuel subsidies, and winds down the fossil fuel industry and all related infrastructure, while providing generous supports to all impacted workers and communities, creating good green jobs, and expanding public economic institutions to implement the transition.
Despite the growing calls for a just transition from experts and communities, the government is stalling. We shouldn’t be surprised – the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers lobbied the federal government
at least 93 times this past year. That’s why we need to push back even harder.
Prime Minister Trudeau still hasn’t indicated when or even if his government will keep its promise to introduce just transition legislation. The government hasn’t even shared new mandate letters with its Cabinet Ministers at a time when the flooding in B.C. has made it more clear than ever before that we’re in a climate emergency.
The House of Commons is about to go on holiday on December 17 for over 40 days until the end of January. But there’s no break from the climate crisis. And we’re running out of time for this government to introduce a just transition in the first 100 days of Parliament.
As part of our Flood Parliament campaign, people across the country are asking their MPs to bring our demand for just transition legislation to the House of Commons. This work is building up local networks of people who are calling for a just transition in our communities, and calling on MPs across party lines to champion this important legislation.
As the Council and our allies made clear at the No More Delays rally in Ottawa when Parliament reconvened last month: the climate clock is ticking.
We need to turn up the heat on the House of Commons. Nearly 20 Members of Parliament have committed to tabling our just transition petition in Parliament. Will you help us flood your MP’s office so we can reach 40?
Tell your MP to take action for a just transition for your community.
Take Action Now
Join in the action today! Here’s how:
- Tell your MP to take the pledge to table the Flood Parliament just transition petition. Send any response(s) you get from your MP to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
- Start or continue collecting petitions in your community. Use this toolkit to help guide your work. Even if your MP says they won’t table the petition, there are ways to get them to change their mind. Get in touch and we can help with that.
- Plan a meeting with your MP to ask them to table and speak about the petition. Watch our recent workshops here: Meet with MPs and Why a just transition needs to be public.
- Already met with your MP? Let us know how it went.
- Stay tuned for upcoming workshops and webinars to keep this momentum building.
With hope and resolve,
Dylan Penner
Climate and Social Justice Campaigner
P.S. If your MP has already tabled the petition or agreed to, that’s ok! There isn’t a limit to how many times an MP can table the petition and we want to flood parliament with support for a just transition, so the more times your MP tables the petition the better.
