Immunity for spying on citizens? Really?

  • Print

This is unbelievable. Justice Minister Peter MacKay is pushing through a bill that will give immunity to telecom providers who hand over our private data to police without a warrant. We need to spread the word about this dangerous legislation right now - please watch our hard-hitting viral video then share it with everyone you know online.

Take action!

Justice Minister Peter MacKay is trying to cover the government’s online spying tracks by pushing a bill through Parliament that will actually provide immunity to telecom companies who have shared your sensitive private data without a warrant.1

That means that if you are the victim of cyber criminals, identity theft, or even wrongly targeted by police because your Internet or cell phone provider handed over your information without cause:

  1. You don’t have the right to sue your provider for damages
  2. You might never even find out your rights have been violated.

Parliamentarians are about to head home to their local ridings and your OpenMedia.ca team has a great way for you to amplify your voice at this unique moment.

Thanks to donations from Canadians like you, we’ve just launched a hard-hitting viral video to spread the word - please watch it then share it right now with everyone you know online: www.OurPrivacy.ca

MacKay’s reckless legislation would also enable a range of authorities to use information from your Internet provider to create a detailed profile of you based on the websites you visit and the people you talk to online.

Get this -- the cost of this privacy invading activity will be passed onto you through taxes and telecom fees.

We beat back online spying before and we know how effective viral videos can be in making decision-makers sit up and take notice. We need your help right now - please watch this video then share it with everyone you know online.

Here’s how you can share:

If all this sounds familiar it’s because MacKay’s new spying immunity bill C-13 is pretty much an exact copy of previous Public Safety Minister Vic Toews’ online spying proposals.2 The same legislation that was defeated after over 150,000 people like you took action and shared our viral videos with their fellow Canadians.

We need to fight back against Peter MacKay’s spying immunity bill C-13. Check out the video to learn more and spread the word.

Thank you for being a part of this,

Steve, David, and Josh, on behalf of your OpenMedia.ca team

P.S. If you think it’s wrong to provide legal immunity to telecom providers who have handed over our private data without a warrant, whilst limiting our privacy rights under the law, please consider chipping in to support our hard hitting work today. We’re trying our best to push back and we can use all the help we can get.
