PAOV — There are no provisions for pets in British Columbia’s natural disaster response plans. This means that the government does not provide pet food at emergency shelters and does not cover pet fees in their hotel voucher program. Over 38,000 people are urging the government to consider pet needs in disaster response plans so that families are not forced to abandon pets in emergency situations. The BC Government does not provision for them to be provided food or shelter or cover hotel pet fees in their hotel voucher program. Their needs are not considered during immediate crisis intervention. Organizations like Animal Food Bank step in to fill this gap. Completely volunteer operated and non-funded. We ask for a unified approach and plan for immediate crisis intervention, consistently available for evacuees at ALL Emergency Services locations during natural disasters. We ask that you create a Task force made up of organizations like ours, and the many sister grass-root organizations who work alongside us to ensure pets are taken care, sit at a table with you to change this. No pet should be left behind and no family should be left to choose their pets life over their own.
