BREAKING: NDP & Liberals strike a deal to work together to deliver a Just Transition

We got some huge news this morning.

The Liberal Party and the NDP have officially struck a deal to govern cooperatively until 2025.1 This deal is subject to the Liberals prioritizing key policies put forward by the NDP and a commitment to pass Just Transition legislation is one of these key policy priorities.

Paov, this is big news, and all thanks to people like you who have taken action over and over again to make sure that a Just Transition Act is top of mind for our political decision makers.

Now that we’re closer than ever to winning a Just Transition Act, let’s make sure that the legislation we end up with meets the scale and urgency of the crises we face. Make a submission now to Natural Resources Canada to demand a Just Transition Act that puts people first, creates millions of green jobs, and aligns with climate science.

Earlier today, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh shared that their cooperation with the Liberals is contingent on the Trudeau government finally delivering “Just Transition legislation, guided by the feedback we receive... from workers, unions, Indigenous peoples, communities, and provinces and territories."2

This sounds great but we know that Big Oil is doing everything in their power to hijack the Just Transition consultations and water down this critical legislation. Just last week, they launched their own tool to flood the public consultation process with messages in support of oil and gas.3

That’s why it’s absolutely essential that we show the government that people across the country need a bold and ambitious Just Transition plan that rapidly shifts us off fossil fuels in a way that takes care of workers, communities, and the planet.

It’s clear that we can accomplish so much when we stand together. Just over a week after communities across the country mobilized, the NDP and Liberal parties have made an agreement to govern together and deliver long-promised Just Transition legislation.

Now it’s time to stand together and demand legislation that’s truly bold enough to tackle the climate crisis while ensuring no one is left behind.
